Amethyst didn't follow the old man, or creature, into the alley. She noted where he'd entered, and she held back. She considered, briefly, just entering through the front of the club, finding Vein, and telling him why she was there. If it had just been Vein, or Bones, or Bruno, she'd have done it without a second thought. It was Kali that held her back. The quest was important, and it was important that the girl feel as if, at the very least, the majority of what was to come was her alone.

So Amethyst waited. She pulled back into the shadows of the alley, not far from where the thin, blind man had stood so recently. As she watched, and waited, she pulled a small amulet from her pocket. One side was polished to a mirror finish. She held the chain in her hand and breathed on the surface. She took one nail and etched a symbol on the surface, then waited. Five dots appeared on the surface. One was black as pitch and looked as if someone had taken an arc welder to the metal, chipping a bit from its surface. The other four glowed very lightly. All were red. She wished there were six.

Cleo stood at her feet, tail wrapped around Amethyst's legs. The hair on the big cat's neck and tail was puffed, and her eyes glittered. Amethyst leaned down and stroked her back, keeping her eyes on the surface of the amulet.

"Where are you, Donovan?" she whispered.

Almost as if someone had heard her, one of the four red spots faded to a yellow glimmer, and moved slowly off to the side of the others.

"Here we go," she said. She heard the music from the club, and something else – something raw and clear. The black chip on her amulet began to pulse.
